Item Description... Overview General editor Lloyd J. Ogilvie brings together a team of skilled and exceptional communicators to blend sound scholarship with life-related illustrations.
The design for the Preacher's Commentary gives the reader an overall outline of each book of the Bible. Following the introduction, which reveals the author's approach and salient background on the book, each chapter of the commentary provides the Scripture to be exposited. The New King James Bible has been chosen for the Preacher's Commentary because it combines with integrity the beauty of language, underlying Hebrew and Greek textual basis, and thought-flow of the 1611 King James Version, while replacing obsolete verb forms and other archaisms with their everyday contemporary counterparts for greater readability. Reverence for God is preserved in the capitalization of all pronouns referring to the Father, Son, or Holy Spirit. Readers who are more comfortable with another translation can readily find the parallel passage by means of the chapter and verse reference at the end of each passage being exposited. The paragraphs of exposition combine fresh insights to the Scripture, application, rich illustrative material, and innovative ways of utilizing the vibrant truth for his or her own life and for the challenge of communicating it with vigor and vitality.

 | Psalms 1-72 (Mastering the Old Testament Vol. 13) Dec 31, 2000 |
| I had looked for a good commentary on Psalms in the past, but was never able to find anything satisfactory. I am very picky about how commentaries deal with the scriptures and I'm not interested in weak, milk-toast interpretations. I want a book that is meaty and can give me greater insight and understanding than what I already have; something that can answer questions that I've not been able to resolve through my own studies. This book by Donald Williams has satisfied that need. I was quite surprised by the indepth, thorough treatment that he has given to each of the Psalms covered in this volume. It is actually an exhaustive exposition, and well written at that. He is obviously well acquainted with the content of the Psalms, has a very mature understanding of what they are about, coupled together with signs that he has a scholarly background which puts everything into proper context and perspective. His studies are balanced, practical, technical and yet very easy to read, and never dry. Anyone who has a relationship with the Lord, and is familiar with the Psalms will recognize that Dr. Williams knows what he is talking about; he opens up our understanding of what the sacred writings are saying. Also, throughout my reading I noticed that Dr. Williams is soundly moored in the Hebraic roots and nature of the scriptures, making mention of Torah, Yahweh etc., and he obviously understands Hebrew history, culture and prophecy (what a relief!). This was a very refreshing aspect of the book. As far as I am concerned, this book hits the bulls eye, I would recommend it to anyone. I'm definately going to buy the companian volume that covers Psalms 73-150! | | | Write your own review about Commentary-Psalms 1-72 (Preachers Commentary V13)
