| If you're a neocon who loves to read Grimm's fairy tales, you'll love this book. If you are interested in the book because you read "Alas, Babylon" or "Earth Abides", and you want to satisfy an itch for a good story in that genre, it would be best if you scratched elsewhere. I like most books Forstchen writes. This book is distant from most. I felt that this should have been marketed as a book to scare and warn, like a docudrama on television. The story is weak and flawed. The character build up is missing from almost every one of them. We read all about how bad it is yet feel nothing for the millions who die. Everything is second hand information. This book seems designed to warn us of EMP attacks and the results, but as a novel, not very good. Some one compared it to ON THE BEACH, oh please!

| Yes, it's possible we could be subjected to an EMP attack and our lives would be seriously disrupted. However, this book uses unnecessary hyperbole, distortion of facts and I would not recommend it to anyone likely to be take it at face value and be seriously disturbed. It doesn't help people prepare for a disaster by grossly exagerating the end result to the point they feel doomed and nothing can be done. I realize it's a work of fiction but the forward and afterword dress it up as a scientific fact and a warning to the duped American people. Most cars and trucks would still be driveable. You do not have to go out and buy a 1960 VW beetle and do not need enough food stored for a year. If you like horror novels or movies this book is for you. It has plenty of murder, mayhem and even cannibalism. If you want the real facts about EMP the internet has plenty of data and testing results. | This is a very good book -- among Mr Forstchen's best efforts. I have heard a few people knock the science, but there are many differing hypotheses on EMP. There are no theories as no one is testing to test any of the hypotheses. If we could see the results of the Russian atmospheric tests of the 2 super bombs they set off in the early 60s, we would have some hard data. From experience, I tend to go with the worst possible scenario, which this represents. From what little material is available, the results of an EMP would depend on the strength of the field that was generated. A strong enough pulse would take out every piece of technology with a printed circuit, transister, capacitor, resistor, or diode that is operating or connected to the power grid at the time of the pulse. The basic message of this book is valid and applies to any number of disaster types that occur on a grand scale. We will be on our own. No American city is more than 3 days away from a food riot. Civil order will break down quickly in some places, not at all in others. Mr Forstchen captures that well in this book. It is a good, captivating yarn... not a treatise on the physics of the causitive incident. Take it for what it is and then do your own research. | | | Write your own review about One Second After
