What is a God chaser?
A God chaser is an individual whose hunger exceeds his reach.
A God chaser is a person whose passion for God's presence presses him to chase the impossible in hopes that the uncatchable might catch him. A child chases a loving parent until, suddenly, the strong arms of the father enfold the chaser. The pursuer becomes the captive; the pursued the captor. Paul put it this way: ¿I chase after that I may catch that which has apprehended me¿ (Phil. 3:12).
Job was a God chaser. He said, ¿Oh, that I knew where I might find Him!¿ David was one; he said, ¿My soul followeth hard after Thee.¿ Paul was one too: ¿That I may know Him...¿ The passionate paths of God chasers can be traced across the pages history from Moses the stutterer, David the singer, and Paul the itinerant preacher, to contemporaries like A.W. I agree with his statement "there is as much of God in most bars as there is in most churches". Most church services are all about pleasing man,not God,today. The first chapter has a "bowl you over" example of what church would and should be like if God was truly present in your service,and also shows how it is God who brings revival,not man's planned program and advertising.It is also God who brings the people in. Every pastor needs to read this book!
I could not give it 5 stars because I do not agree with a few things. The woman with the Alabaster box who annoited Jesus and washed His feet with her hair is never identified in scripture,period,certainly not as Mary Magdalene,nor are her sins,and Mary Magdalene was delivered of 7 demons,nowhere in scripture,is it ever said that she was a prostitute(as he claims)! (another gripe I have about the Passion film)
I do agree with the author's view on how a Christian who truly wants the kind of relationship with God that is possible, and that He desires from us,must be willing to deny "self". This is a terrific book to teach believers how to pursue the Lord and what it takes to reach each level the Lord wants us to attain. We will be under construction, by the Master Builder, all the way to the gate, but the Lord is never stagnant and has created us to fellowship with Him, we can be more than we think...we must believe Him!! Our group is studying this book, one chapter at a time, over a 10 session time frame. I appreciate Tommy Tenney's continual pointing back to the Word, because that's number one in our pursuit of the Lord's face. Our group's theme is to seek, see, and touch the face of God and to not be satisfied with anything less.
