Item Description... Overview Eighteen-year-old Astrid Bjorklund has always dreamed of becoming a doctor. Will she have to give up love to pursue her dream?
Publishers Description Beloved author Lauraine Snelling returns again to her popular Red River Valley setting. Eighteen-year-old Astrid Bjorklund has been studying medicine under Dr. Elizabeth Bjorklund's direction and dreams of joining her practice in Blessing. But when a missionary arrives and tells of the need for medical ministry in Africa, he seems to look directly at her. Could God be calling her to go to Africa? Joshua Landsverk left Blessing two years ago, but he's never forgotten Astrid. Returning to town, he seeks to court her, and love begins to bloom. When the opportunity opens for Astrid to go to Chicago for further training, she finds it difficult to leave home...and Joshua. They agree to correspond, but after receiving only one letter from him, she learns he's left town--again. Believing Joshua no longer loves her, Astrid makes an impetuous, heart-wrenching decision. Will she regret the choice she's made? |

 | Read her other Blessing novels first! Nov 29, 2009 |
Ever turn on your TV about 15 minutes too late to catch the beginning of what seems to be a great movie? This book is very much like that. You get the impression that Astrid Bjorklund was once more "spirited" and impulsive in her past, however, the Astrid of this book is very controlled and seems much older than 18 (but you don't know why).
Astrid has unexplained feelings for a gentleman who has just returned to Blessing after being away for 2 years. Not enough of the previous book is recapped for us to understand why Joshua cares for Astrid, or why Astrid is attracted back immediately. Just as the relationship starts Astrid leaves for medical training in Chicago and no declarations of care have been exchanged. Joshua hasn't really even dated her, but starts building a house with marrying her in mind? And, Astrid thinks about him a lot, but doesn't know anything about him or whether he cares for her?
The real story of this book is not the relationship - which falls a little flat - but rather the struggle Astrid wages against continuing her medical studies despite a frustration with God allowing good people to die, despite all their efforts and prayers. Astrid develops an irrational fear of putting her hands inside someone to do surgery or delivery for fear they will die too. The realism of these observations, and the spiritual struggle they bring to a young medical student are heartfelt and well covered by Snelling in this novel. In Chicago, God grants her new experiences that verify she will also save lives when He wills it to happen.
The additional turmoil over deciding whether she is meant to spend time doing mission work in Africa, adds even more emotional tension to this story. There is some satisfaction when she decides to take God's lead, one day at a time, but her decision still isn't made at the end of the book. Overall, you will like this book if you have read Snelling's previous books set in Blessing, if not you may need to read those first. | | | | `A Measure of Mercy` (by) Lauraine Snelling Nov 27, 2009 |
The story begins in the summer of 1903 in the town of Blessing, North Dakota. Pursuant to Astrid's natural gift and dream of becoming a Dr. she does her first formal surgery without any formal training. She feels as if she is walking in Jesus shoes, as He healed the sick, restored sight to the blind, and made the lame walk. After facing two deaths she questions whether she should become a Dr.
I appreciate that God is referenced from the beginning of the book, and throughout the entirety of the book.
Lauraine's writing is straight and to the point. | | | | Read the earlier series first! Nov 25, 2009 |
There is a lot going on in this book. It is the first in a new series but is also a continuation of a previous one. I had difficulty keeping the characters straight at first but once Astrid moves to Chicago, the people started sorting themselves out by family and relationships. This isn't a weakness of the book--just an observation for the reader to not start with this book of Snelling's unless you've read the previous ones.
I loved the book and hope to read the rest as they come out. I also would like to read the previous series by Lauraine Snelling. She had many messages for me in this book. At the beginning, after losing a patient she had performed surgery on, Astrid is confused about her calling to be a doctor. She and her mom are admiring the sunrise and Astrid points out the beautiful colors. Ingeborg replies that the clouds make the sunrise all the more beautiful. She doesn't preach--just makes the statement, leaving Astrid and the reader to make the connection for themselves.
Joshua had previously left Blessing because he could no longer afford his claim. When he returns he works drilling water wells and putting up windmills on farms. The descriptions of the delight in having running water for the cattle in even in the house were a reminder that many of the things we take for granted were truly miracles at one time, not so long ago. I loved the description of the housewives happy tears of joy when the water pours from the pump!
Read this book--I loved it and hope you will too. | | | | I Laughed, I Cried, I Loved It! Nov 22, 2009 |
A Measure of Mercy is the first in the Home to Blessing series. The story of the Bjorklund family, who first settled the town now called Blessing, North Dakota, continues with the youngest daughter of Ingeborg and and Haakan. Astrid Bjorklund has been training with her sister-in-law Dr Elizabeth Bjorklund and is now ready for surgical training in Chicago. Astrid dreams of continuing her practice with Dr Elizabeth in the hospital they hope to build in Blessing.
Just before she departs for Chicago a missionary visits the church and tell of the need for medical missionaries in Africa. At the same time Joshua Landsverk returns to Blessing seeking to court Astrid.
Astrid leaves for Chicago with both Africa and Joshua on her mind. Is God calling to be a missionary? Will she return to Blessing and Joshua?
This inspiring story lives up to the reputation of all the other Bjorklund books. Ingeborg is busy as always serving the community and teaching her family, and us the readers, to love, serve, and follow God.
As always the Blessing women are an inspiration in how they work together to support one another and help the nearby Indian reservation.
Those who have followed the Bjorklund family through the other series will not be disappointed in this book. It is as well written and researched as the rest.
First time readers will also love this boo. As always, Lauraine Snelling does a fabulous job of making this book enjoyable even for those who haven't read the previous books.
I laughed, I cried, I loved it.
*** I received a complimentary copy of the book from Bethany House for review purposes.
