Product Description Studio: Uni Dist Corp (music) Release Date: 10/03/2006
Outline This tale of good versus evil takes place in a magical land where toys come to life and evil is transformed into good. What makes The Christmas Angel especially entertaining is the combination of graceful skating by such well-known talents as Dorothy Hamill and Elvis Stojko and the emotive music of Mannheim Steamroller. The story tells of an evil gargoyle named Gargon (Stojko) who steals the Christmas angel (Tonia Kwiatkowski) from atop a snowy village's Christmas tree, thereby preventing the arrival of Christmas. A young mother (Hamill), along with a host of toys-come-to-life, follows Gargon into the dark otherworld in an attempt to rescue the stolen angel. In the end, the angel is freed along with a host of lost souls and Christmas is saved. Unfortunately, this engaging 45-minute story is given a hokey framing sequence of Olivia Newton-John and Chip Davis posing as parents reading a Christmas story to their children. The costuming and sets are fun, bright, and absolutely captivating. The skating is spectacular, offering an optimal mix of solo and ensemble performances. Favorite Mannheim Steamroller renditions of classics like "Good King Wenceslas," "Angels We Have Heard on High," and "Greensleeves" add a pathos and drive to the story. DVD special features include a five-minute (minimally informative) interview with composer and narrator Chip Davis, brief textual biographies of the primary skaters, a video clip of Mannheim Steamroller: Christmas Live, and a short, written history of American Gramaphone. --Tami Horiuchi

Reviews - What do our customers think?

| This DVD is now a Christmas standard in our family. I bought it originally just being a Chip Davis fan. But this year I bought a second copy for the gkids to have. Most of the adults in the family will sit and watch it. Though basically a fairy tale, this movie actually includes a family setting and the reading the story. Having Olympic skaters is just a stroke of genius. They do a great job. | | | | Unfortunate Experience Nov 25, 2009 |
| I hold the place of unfortunate viewer who stumbled across this steaming pile of crap while perusing channels around Christmas last year. To my amazement, a slew of Christmas-themed costumed characters skated in random directions like roaches scattering after a light is flipped on. Not only was I frozen in disbelief as this sad excuse for a Christmas special rolled on, but was actually unable to move to turn the channel. Seeing the hypnotizing part that I did of this terrible production has remained a macabre plight burned into my brain. Luckily, I was able to somehow move my hand to the control and eventually turn the channel after the shock and disbelief that something like this would be aired on television wore off. If I could give this movie a negative star rating I would. Not enjoying this production has nothing to do with the lack of Christmas spirit; the blazingly horrible choreography and random characters from all facets of Christmas rolled into one scene would be too much for anyone I know to stomach. I definitely agree with Chef. This is just one of those Christmas specials that networks use to take up air time so that they can go home and enjoy a real Christmas with their families, sans this bag of crap. | | | | A Christmas Angel Dec 20, 2007 |
| Thoroughly enjoyable DVD. I have long followed the skaters and skating shows. So I am familiar with the cast of this show. The addition of Mannheim Steamroller music adds to its uniqueness. I bought a sample of this DVD last year and decided I must have the complete show. Well executed wih a cute story line. Randy Gardner's choreography is amazing. | | | | A beautiful Christmas tradition Dec 7, 2007 |
