 | Disappointing Apr 15, 2010 |
"Angel Fall" was written by Coleman Luck, published by Zondervan. The story begins with three children/young adults facing a big change in their lives. They are leaving the home of their mother in the United States to live with their father in England. Very soon they find themselves in a whole other world facing problems that are larger than anything they've ever imagined before. In fact, the fate of the world rests on their shoulders. The world they are in is filled with fantastic creatures, powerful magic, much good and much evil. Will they fulfill their calling? Will they survive? Will the world be saved?
This book has been a challenge to read. Long descriptive passages give way to long dialogues, both repetitive at times. The characters are stereotyped and I felt like I knew what they'd do before they did it. Nor did the characters mature much through their adventures. Several themes were borrowed from other fantasy books. I felt like the author was trying too hard and didn't know if he was writing fantasy or allegory. For a book that was compared to the works of Lewis and Tolkien, it falls far short of the higher goal. | | | | A complex fantasy Jan 22, 2010 |
| "Fallen Angel" is a complex fantasy, weaving details of imaginary realms and other-worldly beings into a narrative about three very human children. Throughout his book, Coleman Luke takes his readers on a journey with such twists and turns that the gravitation pulls them from one chapter to another. My only complaint is that the details are so intricate that I occasionally got lost in them. Nonetheless, it is a great read. As others have said, this book reminds one of Lewis or Tolkien in that it uses story to offer insights regarding spiritual principles truly at work in our world. The vivid use of language, the development of characters, and the expanse of imagination in the book make me hope it will be followed by further offerings from the author. | | | | Compelling book. | Very captivating read. Coleman is a great word smith and uses his talents to create a tale that pulls you in and keeps you there to the very end. | | | | Thought Provoking Dec 1, 2009 |
The was an unusual book for me as fantasy is not one of my usual genres, but the story drew me in and held my interest to the end. I looked forward to each chapter as the next stage of the story presented itself and new adventures were presented to each character. I found the book well written, intelligent, and with spiritual images that were interesting and thought provoking. Some were obvious spiritual messages; others were a little more obscure (at least for me). Although the book is about three children, this is not a book for small children. Its detailed descriptions are horrifyingly scary and dark.
Overall, the story is very much like the struggles we have every day. We daily strive for with good, which can be hard to find, but all too often find greed and desires which can look so inviting. We suffer consequences of our decisions, but redemption is always in reach.
I am surprised that this is the author's first novel. Angel Fall can easily compete with the works of more well known authors of this genre, and I look forward to the author's Mentalist Series. | | | | Great Read; Intense Imagery; Twisting Story Oct 14, 2009 |
| I followed the recommendation of a friend and ended up reading Angel Fall in 2 days. I loved the fantasy and the imagery was mind-blowing. The story and the characters ended up twisting and turning in very imaginative ways. At different points I thought I had the story figured out only to find myself stymied. Lastly, the way the story illustrated truth was powerful. | | | Write your own review about Angel Fall
