 | Inspiring! May 24, 2010 |
| Once again John Maxwell has hit a home run with this book. Written in his characteristic easy going style with lots of anecdotes and quotes to stimulate thought and engage attention. However, I must point out that this book is meant for people who already have or had a dream. I have found out that most people dream about making it through the day - and that's about it. This book will not do you much good. After the introduction , there is a dream test which John encourages the reader to take before continuing with the rest of the book. If you do not have a dream you will answer most if not all the questions in the negative the remaining part of the book does you little good. This book does not teach you how to dream or to get a dream. It helps those who have a dream or have lost sight of their dream recover it and get back on track. So before buying this book ask yourself the question: Do I have a dream? Or Did I have a dream? If you cannot answer "yes" to either of these questions , then this book is not for you. But if you can, this book will help you get on track and run toward the mark of fulfilling your dreams. I give the book 4 stars simply because it does not help those who have no dream. I think John should have added a chapter or two on discovering your dream so that everyone can be carried along. | | | | How to achieve your dream in 10 questions? May 16, 2010 |
This is a book about how to achieve your dream. No matter how old or young the person and how big or small the dream. The formula is always the same. As i read the book, it opened my mind that a dream is not all about "Goal Setting such as, SMART ( Specific Measurable Achieveable Realistic Time Bound )" and the Secret, Cheque that i got from the Website. A dream must be taken in tons of Action & Feedback.
Basically, of this book, there are 10 questions of how great your dream. If the person can answer all of these questions, of the author's perspective. He / She is ready to reaching the dream or living in his / her dream. Here are the questions !
Chapter 1 - Is my dream really my dream ? Chapter 2 - Do I clearly see my dream? Chapter 3 - Am I depending on factors within my control to achieve my dream? Chapter 4 - Does my dream compel me to follow it? Chapter 5 - Do I have strategy to reach my dream? Chapter 6 - Have I included the people I need to realize my dream? Chapter 7 - Am I willing to pay the price for my dream? Chapter 8 - Am I moving closer to my dream ? Chapter 9 - Does working toward my dream bring satisfaction? Chapter 10 - Does my dream benefit others?
What made me want to highlight are Chapter 1, 6, and 10.
In chapter 1, it is "The Ownership Question." Most people, of my experience, don't follow their dream. It is probably their parents, friends, or even teachers. That's why, they aren't happy with their life or even had a lot of bitterness in their memory. So, you, my reader, have you found your inner dream? your truly dream? If you are not supported by your parents or friends or people around you, yes accept it! Yet, my suggestion is, keep the dream in your mind and do in small way, slowly but sure, toward your dream. I guarantee that people will understand what is your truly dream about!
"Do What you Love - Blackberry"
In Chapter 6, it is "The People Question." Being born in conservative chinese family, I lived a life that "I can do by myself." I assumed that others couldn't help what i wanted. That was totally wrong. Whatever it is, I realized that I need someone or a team to fulfill my dream. According the book, The people who are in our team must be the one who always inspire us, who always tell the truth, and whose skills complement with ours. To be honest, put away the people who don't fit within these categories. It is true. We must be selective with our friends. Indeed we can socialize with all of the people, but to achieve our dream, we must be selective with your team.
"The bigger the dream, the greatter your need"
In Chapter 10, it is the "Significance Question." This is what I like most among other questions. Why? Most people, their target / dream only to becoming a millionaire, to getting a new car, and to purchasing a bungalow and superb house. Yet, my questions is "Are they happy?" Those worldly things frankly are just in temporary. You may not feel now. But after you achieve all of them, you will feel nothing. So, how to possess fulfillment in our life? Of the book, our dream must bring a positive impact to others. Yeah. That's it! Firstly, you may speak, "What is it for? I just want all of my dream to be accomplished, TROY! That's it. Nothing more than that." From my experience as VP of Marketing, SEFTer, lots of books that i've read and after 10 months of contemplation in Singapore. I felt this is true. Maybe you dont believe in me or you dont have anything to make a great impact to people, but let me tell you, I was a heavy online gamer and underachiever in school. After i told all of my breakthrough stories in my life especially in Singapore from last January 2010, people started to support me and my story.
"Everyone can bring a positive impact to others."

"Put Your Dream To The Test" by John Maxwell is a challenging and encouraging title for the reader who is wondering about whether or not a particular dream should be pursued.
The covers 10 main areas of a dream: Ownership, Clarity, Reality, Passion, Pathway, People, Cost, Tenacity, Fulfillment, and Significance.
Among the points covered by Maxwell include:
1. A clear vision of your dream should come first before implementing the strategy to achieve your dream. 2. Do not depend on luck, your dream must meet with reality to be achievable. Focus on what you can do and then do it. 3. 3 significant things that passion does for us. 4. 3 positions to consider in the process of achieving your dream. 5. If you want to achieve a dream, you need a team to help you. 6. 5 things that are true for everyone who pursues a dream. 7. People who live their dream refuse to give up. 8. 6 things to learn while living in the gap between the birth of a dream and its realization. 9. We cannot help others if we have nothing to offer. 10. Make sure you consistently live out what you say.
The books is yet another great Maxwell title. The author readily gives credit to people of several different cultures and backgrounds whose quotes are included in the book. The only comlaint is that I would have liked to have seen more Bible verses and more examples of Christians and people mentioned in the Bible who pursued and fulfilled their God-given dream.
Still, a highly recommended title.
Read, enjoy, and be encouraged and challenged to reflect on and pursue with passion your dream!
