Item Description...
The power of story as God's word to the community of faith is never more clear than in the books of Samuel. Emotion, drama, complexity of character, and mystery fill the pages of these two biblical books. Eugene Peterson's commentary emphasizes the resonance and interplay between these stories of kings and prophets and the social and cultural issues that concern us today. Books in the Westminster Bible Companion series assist laity in their study of the Bible as a guide to Christian faith and practice. Each volume explains the biblical book in its original historical context and explores its significance for faithful living today. These books are ideal for individual study and for Bible study classes and groups. |

Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | Insightful and lively Mar 14, 2008 |
| Peterson's ability to see the interrelatedness of the text is obvious in this commentary. His work emphasizes literary analysis over historical background material. At times he takes literary liberty with the interpretation (Nathan is David's "pastor") but his ability to penetrate the text and bring out the greater message makes the book a rewarding read. The book is insightful and refreshing. Especially helpful is this work for any studying the life of David. | | | | Clear and Challenging Commentary Dec 19, 2006 |
| This commentary is readable and challenging personally. It is excellent for personal use, teaching and sermon preperation. Peterson does not go into minute detail but uses the stories of Hannah, Samuel, Saul, and David to challenge individuals today. I have never been disappointed in a Eugene Peterson book. I have not read the other commentaries in this series but intend to and hope they are also readable and easily applied to life today. | | | | Excellent homiletical commentary Oct 6, 2006 |
| Eugene Peterson has written a wonderful commentary on 1 and 2 Samuel. While he does not get bogged down in the original language, he deals with language issues and theological problems adequately enough for the typical pastor. Peterson also makes practical application of the text in a biblical way. Peterson is reliably evangelical and reformed. As I preached through 1 Samuel I found this book along with the commentary by D. R. Davis my two favorite resources. | | | Write your own review about First and Second Samuel (WBC) (Westminster Bible Companion)
